What is a new-school tattoo?

New-school is a tattoo style from the late twentieth century that treats every subject like an animated character: bulging shapes, exaggerated perspective, outlines that swell and shrink, and colors you’d find in a candy aisle. Where traditional is flat and formal, new-school is bouncy and loud, with highlights and glow effects doing a lot of the talking.

It’s the style that lets a lava lamp have a rainbow chrome base and a cicada’s wings go iridescent pink and teal. Nothing has to behave.

What ideas work well in new-school?

Characters, first and foremost: cartoons from your childhood, mascots, monsters, your pet as a superhero. Then objects with attitude, like a lava lamp, a Christmas tree with too many lights, or a skull that’s clearly listening to synthwave. Food, drinks and candy work too. Sentiment isn’t off-limits either; it just arrives wearing a grin.

How big do new-school tattoos need to be?

New-school scales down better than most color styles because the outlines are thick and the shapes are simple, but the glow, chrome and gradients that make it sing need real estate. A single character fits a forearm or calf comfortably. Fill a whole upper arm and you get backgrounds, secondary characters and light effects.
